Why Become a ΣΝ

Joining a fraternity can be one of the most rewarding experiences you can have during your collegiate years. And, although going Greek is a lifetime commitment, choosing the right fraternity for you does not have to be a difficult decision. Simply decide what is most important to you in life, then, find an organization that aligns with those values.

Taken directly from our mission statement, Sigma Nu Fraternity exists to develop ethical leaders inspired by our three founding principles of Love, Honor and Truth. Further, we work to develop the mind, heart and character of each of our members so they, too, can realize our vision of Excelling with Honor.

While you are looking for the right fraternity, we hope you seriously consider why membership in Sigma Nu is distinctive beyond what other fraternities have to offerit could be one of the best decisions you will ever make.

To Learn The Way of Honor

Our founders at Virginia Military Institute lived by a code of Honor. The Honor system at VMI requires each cadet to conform to the duty imposed by his conscience that each act be governed by a high sense of Honor. We were the first Fraternity to be founded upon this honor principle. When lived out in the bonds of fraternal brotherhood, the Honor principle brings a level of integrity and excellence that is uncommon in the world today.

No Hazing

People often associate hazing with fraternities. Sigma Nu is unique in the fact that we were founded based on honor, which stems from our founders rebelling against the common practice of hazing at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. That principle still holds true today. The Fraternal Staff works very hard to educate our undergraduate and alumni members on the importance of teaching our Candidates (new members) through activities free of hazing, primarily our LEAD Program (Leadership, Ethics, Achievement, Development). Sigma Nu has made available an anti-hazing hotline and e-mail address to anonymously report acts of hazing. This service has been made available not only to our undergraduate members, but to you as well. Should you believe that your son is being hazed, we encourage you to contact us 24 hours a day by calling the hotline at: 1-800-993-1869 or by sending an e-mail to: anti-hazing@sigmanu.org.

Our LEAD Program

Our program is called LEAD, an acronym for Leadership, Ethics, Achievement and Development. The Sigma Nu LEAD program is the finest fraternity education program in the Greek world. However, it is not meant to simply orient you to membership as a Sigma Nu. Its purpose is to develop all men to be ethical leaders on campus and beyond. Sigma Nu will compliment and enhance your other leadership experiences in combination with other leadership development programs, student government, athletics and other organizations.

Our LEAD program has something to offer each year in college

First Year- LEAD Phase 1- establishes a foundation of knowledge for all new members including Sigma Nus history, mission, why it exists and its structures and policies. As participants progress through each of the sessions, they will begin to understand who they are as men, leaders and brothers.
Second Year- LEAD Phase 2- continues the development of ethical leaders that began in Phase I. Participants in Phase II will begin to develop and refine the skills necessary to become and remain successful leaders in society.
Third Year- LEAD Phase 3-offers an opportunity to put into practice the knowledge and skills developed throughout Phases I and II. This phase takes a "Leadership Lab" approach that drives participants to refine their skills while benefiting their university, Greek and local community.
Fourth Year- LEAD Phase 4-provides an opportunity for graduating members to refine specific skills to be successful in the years immediately following their graduation, as well as an opportunity to continue their committed involvement in the collegiate chapter.
All Chapter LEAD-All-Chapter LEAD Programming is designed to include the entire chapter membership and is organized into three modules:
  • Module A: Personal Development
  • Module B: Chapter Development
  • Module C: Risk Reduction
